EU Threatens Venezuela With New Sanctions in Absence of Progress

The aggressive posture complements the creation of a so-called international contact group made up of the EU and Latin American and European countries. The association will seek, over 90 days, to enable a peaceful outcome to the political and humanitarian turmoil in Venezuela. The U.S. and more than a dozen other nations have recognized National Assembly President Juan Guaido as Venezuela’s legitimate leader and are pressuring President Nicolas Maduro to step down, accusing him of rigging his re-election last year and leading the once-rich country into ruinous poverty.
